Certification Standards
We have reviewed dozens of certification standards and found that the majority of organizations and associations have extremely complicated requirements that have prevented very good, and proven scent detection canine teams from even attempting certification.
We have seen requirements that limit what items a handler can and cannot use, how a handler can or cannot train his or her canine partner. We do not support any inhumane or cruel training methods or implements. We will not exclude those who use prong collars or use e-collars. We have seen hundreds of teams use prong collars and/or e-collars properly.
We believe that the certification should be based on whether or not the canine team can locate and indicate the specific scent source (HRD, person, narcotics, explosives, gun residue or bed bugs) by giving a final response the handler can read, and one that can also be recognized clearly as a 'change of behavior' by a non-canine entity. We also do not believe that a canine team needs to be a member of an organization in order to obtain a certification.
There are no scorings or ratings on our certifications. The certification scenarios will be a realistic set-up of problems according to the specific scent discipline of the canine team. The certification is a pass or fail, and upon completion of the certification every handler will be provided with a detailed evaluation report, and if successful a certificate will be issued. If the team does not successfully certify, they will be afforded a second attempt within thirty days.
For all teams who complete the certification process, a copy of the certification and the evaluation report (pass or fail) will be kept on file in the office. Certification officials will also be available for any court proceedings if needed regarding any certifications.
If you have any specific questions or requests regarding certifications, please do not hesitate to contact us.
